The One Thing Most Buyers Miss

The barrel is 1:9 twist. That matters more than any other spec on this page.

A 1:9 barrel stabilises 55-grain bulk ammunition perfectly and handles 62- and 69-grain loads well. Above roughly 70 grains it starts to run out of spin.

If you plan to shoot 75- or 77-grain match bullets, look at a 1:8 barrel instead — the Ruger AR556 and the Seekins Precision NX15 both use 1:8.

If you plan to shoot bulk 55-grain at the range, which is what most owners of the M&P 15 Sport II actually do, 1:9 is the right barrel and you are not giving anything up.

Why the Sights Matter at This Price

Most ARs under $800 ship bare. You get a rail and nothing to aim with.

This one includes a Magpul MBUS flip-up rear and an adjustable A2-style front post. That is a genuine $60–90 saved, and more importantly it means the rifle is usable the day it arrives.

The Ruger AR556 at a similar price includes no sights at all. If you are cross-shopping the two, that is the difference.

Armornite, Forward Assist, Dust Cover

Armornite is Smith & Wesson’s nitride barrel treatment. Corrosion-resistant and hard-wearing inside and out.

It is a meaningful upgrade over a plain phosphate bore at this price.

The forward assist and dust cover are worth noting because the original Sport lacked both. The Sport II added them, which is the main difference between the two generations.

The chromed firing pin resists corrosion and wipes clean easily.

Ammunition and Parts

The M&P 15 Sport II chamber is 5.56 NATO, so it safely handles both 5.56 and .223 Remington — a pressure distinction documented by SAAMI. A .223-chambered rifle should not be fed 5.56; this one takes either.

Standard AR-15 magazines and parts fit. Nothing here is proprietary, so the whole aftermarket is open to you.
