Description

Ruger AR556 Rifle — 5.56 NATO, 16.1″ Barrel, 30-Round

The Ruger AR556 is the entry point into Ruger’s AR-15 line and one of the most straightforward ways to get a well-built, American-made 5.56 carbine. No proprietary parts, no unusual dimensions — a direct impingement AR built to standard spec, priced to compete.

What You’re Actually Buying

Direct gas impingement, standard AR-15 pattern, 16.1-inch barrel with a 1:8 twist and an A2 flash hider on 1/2″-28 threads. Six-position collapsible stock, aluminum receivers, 30-round magazine. It weighs 6.5 pounds bare and runs 32.25 to 35.5 inches depending on stock position.

The 1:8 twist is the useful detail. It sits between the older 1:9 and the military 1:7, and it stabilises everything from 55-grain bulk ammunition through to 77-grain match bullets. You are not locked into one bullet weight the way a 1:9 barrel effectively locks you out of the heaviest loads.

Read That Sights Line Again

No iron sights ship with this rifle. A Picatinny rail is fitted, so you can mount an optic straight away, but out of the box there is nothing to aim with.

Budget for either a red dot or a set of backup irons before your first range trip. If you would rather have sights included, the Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport II ships with a Magpul MBUS rear sight fitted.

Ammunition and Feeding It

The chamber is 5.56 NATO, so it safely handles both 5.56 and .223 Remington — a pressure distinction documented by SAAMI. A rifle chambered in .223 should not be fed 5.56; because the Ruger AR556 is 5.56-chambered, you get the full range of both.

Standard AR-15 magazines drop straight in. Nothing about this rifle is proprietary, which is the quiet advantage of buying a conventional AR — magazines, triggers, handguards, stocks and optics from the entire aftermarket fit without adapters. Stock up on .223 and 5.56 ammunition before you go, and browse the wider rifle ammunition range for match and duty loads.

The muzzle is threaded 1/2″-28 under the A2 flash hider, so a brake or suppressor fits directly. Suppressors are NFA-regulated items requiring a separate federal transfer through the ATF and are not included here.

Where It Sits in the Range

FFL Transfer and State Restrictions

This is a modern semi-automatic centerfire rifle. Federal law requires it ship to a licensed FFL dealer in your state for transfer and background check — it cannot be delivered to a residential address. Provide your dealer’s FFL details after checkout.

Several states and municipalities restrict semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines, collapsible stocks, threaded muzzles or flash hiders, and magazine capacity limits apply elsewhere. Verify legality at your delivery address before ordering — see our terms and conditions, or contact us about your state. Buyers must be 18 or older federally for long guns, 21 in some states. Safe storage guidance is published by the NSSF.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Ruger AR556 come with sights? No. An optic rail is fitted, but no iron sights are included. Budget for a red dot or backup irons.

Does it take standard AR-15 magazines? Yes. Nothing on this rifle is proprietary — standard magazines, triggers, stocks and handguards fit.

What twist rate is the barrel? 1:8, which stabilises everything from 55-grain bulk ammunition through 77-grain match loads.

Can I shoot .223 Remington in it? Yes. The chamber is 5.56 NATO, which safely accepts both. The reverse is not true of .223-chambered rifles.

Is the muzzle threaded? Yes — 1/2″-28 under the A2 flash hider. Brakes and suppressors fit directly, though suppressors are NFA-regulated and sold separately.

How does it compare to the M&P 15 Sport II? Very close on price and spec. The main practical difference is that the M&P ships with a Magpul MBUS rear sight and this does not.

Is it made in America? Yes — country of origin is the United States.

Does it ship to my house? No. As a modern semi-automatic rifle it must ship to a licensed FFL dealer in your state for transfer and background check.
