The ELD Match (ELD-M) and ELD-X share Hornady’s Heat Shield tip technology — the tip material that resists aerodynamic deformation in flight and maintains the published BC through the trajectory.

The difference is in what each bullet is designed to do on impact:

ELD-X (Precision Hunter 143gr): engineered to expand on game. The jacket construction, InterLock ring, and tip are all calibrated for terminal performance at hunting distances and velocities.

ELD-M (this product): engineered purely for accuracy. No expansion mechanism — the match construction prioritises BC, consistency, and low SD. This is a paper and steel bullet, not a game bullet.

A buyer comparing these two by grain weight or velocity is comparing the wrong things. They are different tools.

The ELD-M Design

Heat Shield tip. The same material used in the ELD-X. Aerodynamic heating at typical rifle velocities can deform a standard polymer tip over the course of a bullet’s flight, degrading BC. Heat Shield resists this. Hornady verifies the BC retention with Doppler radar.

AMP jacket (Advanced Manufacturing Process). Hornady’s proprietary bullet jacket process produces highly concentric jackets — wall thickness is consistent around the circumference and along the length. Concentricity is the primary driver of in-flight stability and BC consistency from round to round.

High BC. The Hornady Match 6.5 PRC 147-grain ELD-M at 2,910 fps delivers 2,764 ft-lbs at the muzzle and retains velocity more effectively than lower-BC alternatives at the same grain weight.
