Description

Federal Punch 9mm Luger 124gr JHP — 500 Rounds

The Federal Punch 9mm is Federal’s everyday carry defensive load — a 124-grain JHP specifically engineered for concealed carry pistols, with a nickel-plated case for reliable feeding and a sealed primer for ignition consistency.

At $1.40 per round for 500 rounds, this is premium defensive JHP in volume.

Why Federal Named It Punch

Federal introduced the Punch line in 2021 with a specific brief: pass the FBI handgun ammunition protocol at a lower price point than premium duty loads.

The secondary requirement was reliable cycling in compact carry pistols — where premium duty loads sometimes don’t feed cleanly.

The name is functional. A defensive hollow point’s primary job is to punch through barriers — clothing, glass, intermediate materials — and still expand.

That’s what FBI protocol tests measure, and what the Federal Punch 9mm was built around.

The Skived Jacket

Most JHP bullets use a scored or notched jacket to initiate petal separation on impact.

The Federal Punch 9mm uses a skived jacket — the jacket is cut at the nose at multiple points during manufacturing. Those cuts ensure petals begin separating immediately on impact, at consistent angles.

The practical benefit is more consistent expansion across different impact scenarios — through denim, glass, or at the reduced velocities of a 3-inch compact barrel.

Nickel-Plated Brass and Sealed Primer

Compact carry pistols run hotter and extract harder than full-size service pistols. A nickel-plated case provides a harder, smoother surface that ejects more cleanly and resists the moisture exposure of daily carry better than standard brass.

The sealed primer prevents propellant degradation from pocket or holster humidity — a real consideration for ammunition carried daily for months.

124 Grains — The Carry Standard

124 grain is the most common defensive 9mm weight, balancing velocity with sectional density. It is the choice of many police agencies and the weight Federal’s own HST is most commonly carried in.

At 1,150 fps, this produces reliable expansion at standard pressure without requiring +P velocity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the skived jacket? The Federal Punch jacket is cut at the nose at multiple points during manufacturing — “skived.” Those cuts create initiation points for petal separation that work immediately on impact, at consistent angles, regardless of what the bullet passes through before reaching tissue.

How is this different from Federal HST or Hydra-Shok? Three different products. HST is Federal’s premium duty load, optimised for controlled petal formation and tested extensively against FBI protocol barriers at multiple ranges. Hydra-Shok is older (1989), using a center post hollow point design. Punch (2021) targets FBI protocol performance at a lower price point, with reliability specifically optimised for compact carry pistols.

Why nickel-plated brass? Nickel plate provides a harder, smoother surface than standard brass — better extraction from hot compact pistol chambers, better moisture resistance for daily carry exposure.

Is it +P? No — standard pressure at 1,150 fps. Compatible with all 9mm firearms including those not rated for sustained +P.

Is it suitable for compact pistols? Yes — compact carry pistol compatibility was a design brief for the Punch line. Confirm function in your specific firearm with at least 200 rounds.

What does the sealed primer do? Prevents moisture from the primer pocket over weeks and months of daily carry. Humidity from pocket carry or holster sweat can degrade unsealed primers over time.

Can I reload the nickel-plated brass? Technically yes, but nickel plate can crack after repeated sizing. Most carry shooters don’t reload defensive brass regardless.

What’s the per-round cost? $700 / 500 = $1.40 per round.
